Retrieval: processes used to get information back out of memory. Recall: you have to generate an answer (in tip of the tongue example, you"re given definitions of obscure words and you have to recall the words) Recognition: don"t need to generate the answer (shepard"s study of visual memory: shown pictures and then shown again and have to indicant which pictures they had previously seen) Free recall: recall all the words you can from a list you previously saw in any order. Serial recall: recall the names of all previous presidents in the order they were elected (need to recall order in addition to item names- most difficult) Cued recall: give participants some clue to trigger recall (paired associates)
