Most definitions of social psychology emphasize social influences . How individuals influence (and are influenced by) others. Social psychology is an attempt to understand and explain his the thoughts, feelings, and behaviors of an individual are influenced by the actual, imagined, or implied presence of others. Out of sight does not mean out of mind -gordon allport. Processes of social influence occur at different levels of analysis. Impact of individuals on individuals (big influence - familiar people) Impact of groups on individuals (pressure to be accepted) Impact of individuals on groups (produce change to groups) Social psychology (as a social science) takes an investigative and scientific stance toward knowledge. As a science goals are to describe, to explain, and to predict human social behavior (large groups) Ex. to find patterns which apply to large groups of people, and also to identify subgroup differences. Research social psychology often addresses (or should address) social problems.
