ESPM 1011 Study Guide - Final Guide: Exponential Growth, Logistic Function, Characters Of The Legend Of Zelda

35 views2 pages

Document Summary

We know that exponential growth is growth in an unlimited environment, which is not realistic because of limiting factors such as amount of available resources, predators, disease, natural disasters, space, water availability/quality etc. These factors effect human population growth as well, so we should assume human growth is logistic growth. This kind of growth has a finite growth rate, meaning eventually the population will reach a maximum for the environment, known as the carrying capacity. The same limits that apply to other organisms apply to us too. Although consumption appears to be growing exponentially, it too will eventually reach a maximum point when we begin to run out of resources. Third world countries tend to have very high birthrates and therefore fast growing populations. Out of every 100 people added to earth, 97 will be in developing countries. These countries are typically poor and without the necessary resources to support fast growing nations.
