Document Summary

Biological psychology = study of the neural substrates of behavior and mental processes. Aka the relationship between brain and behavior/mental processes. Key assumption: human brains and the brains of other animals are homologous, emotion/feelings, language, thought producing some similarities in behavioral patterns. Have the same basic parts and are in the same relative positions (structure) Behavior - human behavior is flexible (like in relation to weather, we can live in any environment) Other species provide a model, not a replica, of the relationship between the human nervous system and human behavior. Allows for use of more invasive procedures (within strict, ethical guidelines) Provides a simplified model - simpler brain and simpler behavior. Describe the parts of the neuron: dendrites, soma, axons, myelin sheath. Dendrites = branch-like extensions for receiving information from other neurons. Soma = the cell body and central region of the neuron. Listen to the messages from other neurons and pass them along to the cell body.
