Introduction to Tourism
Tourism has gotten big in the last 50-60 years
1 in 11 jobs are related to Tourism
o Tourism Jobs grow faster than: automotive, financial services and health
care (3-4% growth every year)
1950 (1st slide)
o Growth in traveling is due to 3 Categories:
Accessible
Easier to get from A to B
o Ex: took 4 months to get from Egypt to Cape Town
but now it takes a week
Technology
Able to exchange money more easily
Able to learn more about other cultures
o Makes traveling less scary because they can learn
about different parts of the world without being in
the dark
Societal
Because of technology we have had changes in society and
we are more open minded
Top Ranked Countries International Tourist arrivals in 2014
o France 86.3 Million
o United States 77.9 Million
o Spain 68.1 Million

o Russia 31.6 Million
o ALL INCREASED IN TOURISM EXCEPT FOR
TURKEY

everywhere else was safer than Turkey so
more people went
Tourism is vulnerable to safety

more attractive
Having tourism helps the economy because it trickles down from the travelers to
local schools

The Four Main Stakeholders in the Tourism Industry
o Tourist- seeking physical or mental experiences, satisfactions, etc.
o Business- chance for profit through goods and services
o Government of host community- wealth in economy, role in policy,
promotion, development
o Host community- employment and cultural (the ones the tourists get to
know)
Tourism is all about from going to A to B but then returning
o The definition of tourism was not finalized until 1937
This is because of multidisciplinary subject
Ex: business, sociology, psychology,
Tourism was also hard to define because: ALL TOURISM
INCLUDES TRAVEL BUT NOT ALL TRAVEL IS TOURISM
Three Factors that can be used when defining Tourism:
o 1. Purpose of Trip
Ex: going to school is not a trip but going to see your Grandma in a
different city or state = trip
o 2. Distance Traveled
Has to be out of your home environment
Must be 60 miles (aka 100 kilometers) outside of your home
environment
o 3. Duration of Trip
Has to be outside of home environment for a minimum 24 hours
and a maximum of 365 days/a year
This can be fuzzy because of 23.5 hours, etc.
