Document Summary

Man is naturally good and society corrupts him. Poets are like god; realize their true selves (creators) in nature. Created in response to the industrial revolution because they believed humans were. Individuality was created by the romantics and the individual is superior to society being turned into machines. Examples: hugh wolfe in life on the iron mills and daisy miller in daisy miller . Darwinism (survival of the fittest) and the american civil war affected how writers depicted the world around them. Factory system is cruel because nature is cruel. Industrial revolution is a reality; you can"t ignore what is happening and must depict it in graphic detail. Depicts accurate emotions of characters within the lower class as well. The individual is at the mercy of natural forces beyond his control. Daisy is an individual crushed by roman fever. Hugh wolfe sees and embraces beauty but is crushed when accused of stealing the money and sent to jail (kills himself)
