Document Summary

How age should matter: justice as the basis for limiting care to the elderly. Introduction: 68-year old man suffers from severe coronary insufficiency. He had a quadruple by-pass surgery two years ago, but is now confined to bed with no real medical option. Besides that, he was a robust man, a regular tennis player, and is still physically active within the constraints of his cardiac disease. His only option now is to have a heart transplant. The problem lies in the fact that organ procurement organization for his area has a firm policy of no hearts going to anyone over age 65. The belief that older patients would not do well medically with the transplant is an oversimplification. In the man"s case, he can be expected to do quite well. The problem lies in the fact that his life expectancy will be shorter than other recipients of the heart.
