Mendel"s approach allowed him to deduce principles that had remained elusive to others. Trait: a heritable feature that varied among individuals (such as flower color) Characteristics: each variant for a trait, such as purple or white color for flowers. Peas were available to mendel in many different varieties. Mating could be controlled; plants could be allowed to self-pollinate or could be cross pollinated. Mendel chose to track only those traits that occurred in two distinct alternative forms.
