Document Summary

Today, more children are living with one parent, more are involved in special programs to assist with learning and behavioral needs, and more are exposed to living conditions that our society considers to be a risk to development. The perception (accurate or not) that schools are not effective in preparing students for the full responsibilities of citizenship has stimulated a variety of efforts to revise and reform the mission and structure of schools. When schools involve parents, the energies of parents extend well beyond the general boundaries of volunteering. Parents are willing and able to come into the school to offer their time, skills, and energies, and often more than willing to contribute outside of the confines of the school day. When problems arise and require the immediate attention of parent and teacher, little ground has been established for open and direct communication.
