Document Summary

Functions of cell division: reproduction, growth and development, tissue removal. Cell cycle- the life of a cell from the time it is first formed from a dividing parent cell until its own division into two daughter cells. Genome- the cells dna, its genetic information. Chromatin- the entire complex of dna and proteins that are the building material of chromosomes. Somatic cells- all cell in the body expect reproductive cell, have 46 chromosomes, 2 sets of 23, one inherited from each parent. Sister chromatids- joined copies of the original chromosome, each duplicated chromosome has two. Centromere- region containing specific dna sequences where the chromatid is attached most close to its sister chromatid. Mitosis- the division of the genetic material in the nucleus, is usually followed immediately by cytokinesis. The cell cycle: the cell first goes through interphase which has 3 parts. Through these phases the cell grows by producing proteins and cytoplasmic organelles.
