BIO 101 Study Guide - Midterm Guide: Multicellular Organism, Somatic Cell Nuclear Transfer, Mitosis
Document Summary
Bio 101 study guide for exam 3 november 2, 2015. Chapter 4. 2 and 14 - dna structure & replication. Explain why dna is important in living things. Dna stores the genetic data of living things. They carry the information for the creation of proteins. The two dna strands are known as polynucleotides since they are composed of simpler units called nucleotides. Each nucleotide is composed of a nitrogen- containing nucleobase either cytosine (c), guanine (g), adenine (a), or thymine (t) As well as a monosaccharide sugar called deoxyribose and a phosphate group. Make copies of itself, encode information, control cells and tell them what to do, and change by mutation. Just as proteins consist of long chains of amino acids, dna and rna consists of nucleic acid chains called nucleotides. Nucleotides are composed of three units: base, sugar (monosaccharide) and phosphate. Bases are found in both dna and rna. As seen below, they are adenine, cytosine, guanine, thymine, and uracil.
