Form and objectives of interest groups: formal and informal. Some are membership oriented with a lot of membership participation. Others are focused on contribution, like people who send in a check every year. Some are more broadly ideological like liberal or conservative issues. Majority tend to be centered around occupations like the american medical association etc. There are also citizen groups that handle issues important to a wide variety of citizens. There is a wide range of interest groups. Historical emergence of ig"s: we are a large diverse country, different backgrounds, interests and view points. A federal system has a lot of different levels with many ways people can influence politics. Ex: shortly after the civil war when the economy became more nationalized.
