There are universal standards of attraction that are not skin deep but rather fundamentally anchored in adaptive problems that men and women have to solve in mate selection. Main adaptive problem for men is that human female fertility is concealed. The theory goes cues correlated with youth and health have evolved into a universal standard of female attractiveness: bright eyes, clear skin, full lips, symmetrical features, sprightly gait, narrow waist in comparison to the hips. In a study, men were more attracted to pictures of women with a low spine curvature as optimum for carrying babies. Women are drawn to physical characteristics indicating good healthy and a likely ability to provide and protect: broad shoulders with narrower hips, athleticism, strong jawline, deep voice.
