Document Summary

The existence of god and the distinction between the human soul and the body are demonstrated in the meditations. 1st meditation = what can be called into doubt. Descartes has accepted truth from and through the senses, but he does not trust the senses as they have deceived him in the past. It is hard to deny/doubt that his hands/body are his. Never any sure signs to distinguish being awake from being asleep. The things that we see in our dreams are derived from things that are real and exist, not imaginary. Simple and universal things that we consider real contain real colors that we form all the images of things with, whether true or false, that occur in our thought. This class includes bodily nature and its extension, which includes the shape, quantity, size, and/or number of these things, as well as the place in which they may exist and the time through which they may endure.
