Mexico"s 20th c. politics: revolution, dominant party rule and democratization. 1929-2000 > 71 years, interesting political system - dominant party regime. Not a full democracy or a military dictatorship, a hybrid. In power longer than any other political party in history other than the communists in ussr. Democracy - public of ces are lled through free and fair elections held at regular intervals. Dictatorship/authoritarian - public of ces are lled without elections or through sham elections that are neither free nor fair. Dominant party system - public of ces re lled through elections that are minimally free but maximally unfair. Elections tilted in favor of the incumbent. Landowners (rural vs industrial growth), mobilized peasants (zapatistas) Never able to broadly distribute resources (especially socially) Balanced interests to stay in power for a long time. Politicians expect the pri to win the elections. Politicians want to join the pri b/c if they get the nomination > they will win.
