Climate, life, and surface environments are recorded in rock. Weathering breaks down preexisting rock, rock is eroded(moved from original location, but not transported out of environment). Transportation takes place via streams, glaciers, and wind moving particles downhill. Deposition occurs when particles settle out or dissolved minerals precipitate. Burial occurs as layers of sediment accumulate and compact previous layers. The rock then lithifies(lithification) the sediment to make sedimentary rocks.
