What does the character want? He wants to have success and be a band leader

Save the cat moment: When you create tension or a conflict in the audience and then resolve
the conflict.

When you have a well-established story you can lead your audience into an ELIPSES where
there are sections of the movie that are cut out to let the audience fill in the story.

Whose story is it?
• William Munny (Clint Eastwood)
What does the character want?
• He wants to kill the men to get the money without losing his soul.
What does the character need?
• The character needs to be loyal to his wife by not killing people.
What is the tension?
• The Sherriff mostly but towards the end the tension becomes himself.
ACT 1: THE SETUP
• The girl is cut up by the guy
• An offer to kill the cowboys is established
• William recruits his partner
• The trio heads out on their journey
ACT 2: THE OBJECTIVE JOURNER AND STRUGGLE/THE KINETIC ACT
• Subplot of English Bob is established
• William and his partners find and kill the 1st cowboy
• The midpoint or first culmination happens when will is beat up by Little Bill.
• The second culmination or false culmination happens when William feels like he is dying
• Ned leaves to go his own way.
• They kill the second cowboy and the kid breaks down.
ACT 3: CLIMAX AND CONCLUSION/THE PHILISOPHICAL ACT
• Ned is captured, tortured, and killed.
• William breaks. This is noticed because William drink whiskey for the first time
• William kills the sheriff and a bunch of other guys
• William rides off into the darkness, representing him being lost and accepting his true self. A killer.
When William reaches for the Whiskey bottle to take a drink, that is his tipping point. The point where he goes
from suppressing himself to accepting the fact that he is a killer.
Schema: a pattern of thinking that we fall into/a representation of a plan or theory in form of an outline or
model
• There are plenty of schemas that are broken in this movie. One is that stereotypically, cowboys are good
marksman. But Clint Eastwood is terrible with a gone in this movie.
There are many forms of polarity in this film. Most importantly Light and Dark. Eros and Logos.
Leitmotif: a recurrent theme throughout a musical or literary composition, associated with a particular person,
idea, or situation.
