Looking at a variety of factors to understand a culture, event, conflict, etc. Comparative- look at things (values, behaviors, etc. ) cross-culturally and allows us to look at our own culture. Evolutionary- looks at humanity across time and space. Cultural resource management- protecting historical sites: linguistics. Sociolinguistics- looking at the relationship between language and culture. Descriptive- structure and content: cultural anthropology. Applied anthropology- using anthropology to solve human problems and work outside academic settings. Many early approaches and ideologies are now considered ethnocentric and inadequate. Today, anthropologist are less fascinated with the exotic other and include studies and reflection on their own cultures and societies. Franz boaz- one of the first anthropologists to challenge ethnocentrism. Method anthropologists use to collect and analyze data. Participant observation- the anthropologist participates in the activities of the culture he/she is studying.
