Harvesting crops and clearing grasslands and forests. 1847- nitrogen is found to be a nutrient. 1885- biological nitrogen was discovered, denitrification was discovered. 1900- we don"t have enough nitrogen to sustain the civilized world. 1904- haber began to work on nh3, trying to figure out how to change nitrogen in the atmosphere to nitrogen we can use (reactive nitrogen) 1913- bosch put this process to a large-scale production. Haber and bosch didn"t care that the civilized world was running out of nitrogen, they cared that germany was running out of reactive nitrogen to make bombs. The haber-bosch process was invented so that germany could make bombs for world war 1. They were both jewish, died in world war 2. Haber-bosch process: most important human invention, it literally feeds the earth. Without the haber-bosch process the population of the earth would be limited to 4 billion people.
