(geologist calculated the cooling rate of an initially molten earth- however, ignored the ongoing internal heat source: radioactivity) 1896, henri becquerel discovered the radioactivity of uranium. 1905, ernest rutherford suggested that radioactivity could be used to measure the exact age of a rock: a radioactive nucleus spontaneously disintegrates, emitting particles and radiation (energy).
