20th century -> sexology: people were working to understand the laws of sexualities. This was due to the fact that science in general was become more legitimate and widespread. Freud: believed that non- genital pleasure (foreplay) is/was normal. However, it became abnormal when it completely replaced heterosexual intercourse. *feminists challenge marxists: believed the sexual desire, feelings, & preferences are imprinted by gender. Medical forms ask gender in order to provide better healthcare but why do most other surveys ask our gender even if it doesn"t seem needed. We technically have gender neutral pronouns (they, them) but many people haven"t become comfortable with their use yet. Ze: was the earlier attempt at a gender neutral pronoun (of german origin). We unconsciously identify someone"s visible gender in order to understand how we should interact with them based on our social norms. There are also legal issues that are dependent on gender.
