Enacts citizenship, is fair, helps us understand ourselves, gives us knowledge. Controversy- greater in scope, many sides, no easy solution. Argumentation: systematic, strategic process of making supporting, reasonable claims. Persuasion: use of pathos, ethos, and logos to influence someone"s opinion. Competing ideas of: justice- what is ultimately right/fair, the good life- individual preferences- might not reach agreement, that"s ok. Individuals with different values agree for different reasons- not value based, or plan solves for both values. Recognition is looking for common ground, questioning sources of disagreements. But dangerous- can lead to abuse of power, misrepresentation. Intention should be empowerment, not replacement and obviously not manipulation. Public sphere is in between private realm and public realm. Four reformulations of the public sphere (nancy frasier) Goes to extremes to hold audience- mixed with entertainment.
