Boer wars, great trek of 1835: boers were the early dutch settlers who said they were there first (even though african tribes were there), and then the english came and colonized. Boers felt threatened by the english and took the great trek of. 1835 (called voortrekkers): the first boer war occurred when these voortrekkers were moving northeast and hit a between tribes and afrikaners (voortrekkers/boers). Outcome: won these war and created two states: boer republics, dutch reform church: second boer war: boer fight for independence. Defeated by the british (boer republic becomes british self- governing colonies) Afrikaaners: formed np and told english they wanted to. Population registration act of 1950: south africans put into four different racial categories. Blacks deemed non citizens once put into groups (3/4 of population!) Group areas act 1950: blacks deemed to be citizens of ten remote tribal homelands (bantustans) whose boundaries and leaders decreed by the gov (had never really been to these homelands)
