Describe the basic pathway of information flow through neurons that cause you to turn your head when you hear the sounds of your name being called: sensors in your ear transmit the information to your brain. Then, in your brain, the activity of the interneurons in the processing centers allows you to recognize that your name is being called. Interneurons make up a vast majority of neurons in the brain, and they make only local connections. Motor neurons extend out of the processing centers in bundles or nerves and generate output by triggering muscles. They are able to transmit signals to muscle cells, causing them to contract: contrast and compare dendrites and axons: each neuron has numerous dendrites, while they only have one axon. The dendrites are the branched extensions of the neurons that receive signals from other neurons. For both the k+ and na+, there is a concentration gradient across the plasma membrane of a neuron.
