Science: sociologists follow scientific method which is grounded in empiricism (factual, observable, verifiable) Social structure: people are members of social units (structure) that endures over time. Social interaction: how people relate to one another is important. Social change: an alteration in the social order of a society. Trends can vary simultaneously (but that does not mean one causes another or they are even related) Looking forward is generally better than looking back. Us census bureau: family is the householder and all (one or more) other people living together related to the householder by blood, marriage, or adoption. U. n. statistics division: the family within the household, a concept of particular interest, is defined as those members of the household who are related, to a specified degree, through blood, adoption or marriage. Exclusionist: standard north american family ; rely on religious or legal definitions of family; structure over process/function. Inclusionist: allow for a wide variety of definitions; function over structure.
