Act 1 scene 1: roderigo and iago are arguing on a street in venice. Desdemona and has paid iago money to give gifts to desdemona. Roderigo wants to marry her however desdemona has left her house and her father. Iago promises to get him what he wants. Iago tells brabantio that his daughter has run away. Scene ii: brabantio threatens othello and calls for his arrest and imprisonment. Scene iii: the duke appoints othello to lead forces to defend cyprus. The duke promises to support brabantio in prosecuting othello for witchcraft. Once the duke finds out the man desdemona ran away with is othello the duke tells othello to defend himself. Othello asks the duke to send for desdemona so she can speak. Othello and desdemona leave together to defend cyprus. Since iago hates othello he tells roderigo he will help him win back desdemona. Iago asks for money and hears a rumor that othello has had sex with emilia.
