Document Summary

Organismal bio: intracellular digestion in simple organisms: Ex: paramecium produce lysozyme to digest their food within food vacuoles. This is also found in mammalian sweat tears and saliva. Functions as protection/ prevention of infection/ cleans. Sponges also obtain nutrition by intracellular digestion: extracellular digestion requires secretion. Requires proton pump: the intestinal epithelium can transport glucose up the concentration gradient without directly using atp using a cotransporter. It is a hormone made by the pancreas that allows your body to use sugar (glucose) from carbohydrates in the food that you eat. Also helps with storage of glucose for future use. Helps keep blood sugar level from getting too high or too low: glucagon. Alpha cells of pancreas stimulated to release glucagon in the blood. Prevents blood glucose levels from reaching dangerous point. Glucagon stops the liver from consuming too much glucose: not all cells manufacture the specific receptor which allows insulin to bind.
