Document Summary

Naming coordination compounds, intro to coordination compounds. 31 october 2015 a complex: naming, always name the cation before the anion, name the complex ion, name the ligands first, in alphabetical order, then name the central metal. The central metal is usually written before the ligands in the chemical formula so be careful: naming ligands. Anionic ligands ending in ide o (ie- chloride to chloro) Anionic ligands ending in ate ato (ie- sulfate to sulfato) Anionic ligands ending in ite ito (it- sulfite to sulfite) For neutral ligands, the common name of the molecule is used. Pyridine ethylenediamine: greek prefixes (di, tri, tertra ) are used to designate the number of each type of ligand in the complex ion. For polydentate ligands, use the latin prefixes (bis, tris, tetrakis : after naming the ligands, name the central metal. If the complex ion is a cation, metal named as element. If the complex ion is an anion, metal ends with -ate suffix.
