Child development reflects a specific and prearranged scheme or plan within the body. Development from an evolutionary perspective, learning occurs at certain critical period. Freud: development is largely determined by how well people resolve conflicts they face at different ages. Erickson: development consists of a sequence of stages, each defined by a unique crisis or challenge. Children do not mechanically copy what they see and hear, instead the look to other for information about appropriate behavior. Development is influenced by immediate and more distant environments which typically influence each other. Baby down the birth canal = 1 hour. Postnatal period = undergoes synaptic pruning and myelination. Using motion to define objects = 2-4 months. 1 month = chin up + see colors fuzzy. 4 months = sit with support + reach object + see perfect color.
