Psychosis- severe disorder where the person is considered out of contact with reality. Symptoms- thoughts, feelings, behaviors that indicate a mental disorder. If only a few symptoms occur in isolation it"s not super troubling. Syndrome- a group of symptoms that appear together and represent a specific disorder. Ex: hearing voices, flattening, delusions schizophrenia. Duration matters 7 day vs 7 months. Personal stress- subjective report of person feeling stressed or not. Is problematic because some people may not report that they are impaired as a result of their symptoms. The relative frequency of specific conditions in the general public. (face tatts) are not abnormal bc they are apart of a particularly community of people. Excluded: predictable responses to stressors (i. e. mourning) or problems people have with society (i. e. protestors) Jerome wakefield - comes up with criteria for determining something. A condition is a mental disorder only if it results form failure of some internal mechanism to perform its natural function.
