PSYC214 Chapter Notes - Chapter 2: Drug Withdrawal, Supernormal Stimulus, Drug Tolerance
Document Summary
Reflex; two closely related events: an eliciting stimulus and a corresponding response. Simple reflexes mediated by 3 neurons - together constitute the reflex arc. The environmental stimulus activates an afferent neuron (sensory neuron) in the spinal cord. The neural impulses are related to an interneuron and then to an efferent neuron (motor neuron) The afferent neuron, interneuron, and efferent neuron consiste a reflex arc. Responses that are typical of a particular species. Sucking in response to an object placed in the mouth is a characteristic of mammalian infants. Experiment to isolate which of the stimuli elicits the gulls to pecking, tinbergen and perdeck (1950) artificial models instead of real gull parent. Sign stimulus or releasing stimulus; a specific feature of an object or animal that elicits a modal action pattern. Once sign stimulus is identified, it can be exaggerated to elicit an especially vigorous response. Gull chicks eliciting stimulus had to be long, thin, moving object that was pointed downward.
