HUMB0002 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1: Depth Perception, Preganglionic Nerve Fibers, Conjunctiva
Document Summary
Medulla oblongata (hindbrain myencephalon medulla). An extension of spinal cord, slightly longer (~3cm long). The pyramids have corticospinal tracts (nerve fibres that carry motor signals from cerebrum spinal cord) tracks decussate just below pyramids. Contains sensory nuclei that receive input from taste buds, pharynx, and viscera of the thoracic and abdominal cavities, and motor nuclei that control several primitive visceral and somatic functions. Cardiac centre adjusts rate and force of heartbeat. Vasometer centre adjusts blood vessel diameter (regulates bp and reroute blood from one part of the body to another. 2 respiratory centres controls rate and depth of breathing. Other nuclei are concerned with speech, coughing, sneezing, salivation, swallowing, gagging, vomiting, gastrointestinal secretion, sweating, movements of head + tongue. Its white matter includes tracts that conduct signals from cerebrum down to the cerebellum and medulla, and tracts that carry sensory signals up to the thalamus. Nuclei that relay signals from cerebrum cerebellum.
