Lecture 11: schizophrenia: will withdraw into a life of odd beliefs, delusions and hallucinations. Positive symptoms: excesses and distortions- hallucinations and delusions. Hallucinations and other disturbances of perception: world seems unreal to them: depersonalization/derealization. Issues making sense of what is happening around them: hallucination: sensory experience in the absence of any relevant stimulation from the environment, auditory= most common. But can hallucinate in all 5 senses: hear their thoughts spoken by someone else, hear others discussing them, mainly negative. But, if believed to come from someone they know, experienced more positively: misattribute their own voice as someone elses, greater activity in brocas and wernikes area when patients say they are experiencing auditory hallucinations. Negative symptoms: behavioural deficits in motivation, pleasure, social closeness, and emotional expression, many negative symptoms= poorer outcome, core features of the disorder. Asociality: few friends, poor social skills, little interest being with other people, wish for time alone, may seem aloof when interacting with others.
