Psychoanalytic therapy: freuds views still influence contemporary practice, new therapies developed as adaptions to freuds work, extensions of his work or because of rejections to his work. The goal in life is to gain pleasure and avoid pain: death instincts. People manifest through their behavior an unconscious wish to die/hurt themselves or others =an aggressive drive. Need to manage this which is challenging: sexual and aggressive drives= determinants of why people act as they do.
