PSY1011 Chapter Notes - Chapter 2: Auditory Cortex, Primary Motor Cortex, Visual Cortex
Document Summary
An intricate network of neurons organised into identifiable regions with specialised functions. Responsible for: speech production, abstract thought, planning, social skills. Primary cortex: primary motor cortex: situated at the rear of the lobe, functions contralaterally, enables voluntary skeletal movement. Association area: higher order mental processes e. g. language, reasoning, problem solving etc. Responsible for: 3d perception, understanding of the position of the body, spatial awareness. Primary cortex: somatosensory cortex: enables processing of sensation i. e. touch, pressure, temperature, pain, functions contralaterally. Integrates sensory information to form a single perception: this assists us to identify where our body is in relation to the external environment. Responsible for: processing of auditory information, right lobe recognises songs, faces, visual information, left lobe interprets human speech. Primary cortex: primary auditory cortex: enables processing of sound. Association area: enables processing and encoding of memory. Primary cortex: primary visual cortex: enables processing of visual information- interpretation and understanding, contralateral. Association area: enables integration of visual stimuli.
