PSY1011 Chapter Notes - Chapter 4: Classical Conditioning, European Cooperation In Science And Technology, Rebar
Document Summary
An association between two or more stimuli is created on the basis of the consequences of an action. An unconditioned stimulus leads to an unconditioned response, e. g. dog salivates upon seeing food. There is a neutral stimulus which causes no response. The neutral stimulus is repeatedly paired with the unconditioned stimulus. The neutral stimulus has now become a conditioned stimulus, resulting in a conditioned response, previously elicited by the ucs. The cr will cease after several presentations of the cs without the ucs. After a rest period from conditioning, the cs will reignite the cr. However, the cr is weaker after this, and easier to extinct. This is when the cr occurs for not only the cs, but for similar stimuli. When the learner is able to distinguish the cs from similar stimuli, and will only demonstrate the cr for the cs. A conditioned stimulus acts as an unconditioned stimulus in other situations.
