POLI1000 Chapter Notes - Chapter 15: Treaty On The Non-Proliferation Of Nuclear Weapons, Nicholas J. Spykman, John Mearsheimer
Document Summary
Why might writers have wanted to broaden the concept of security? (particularly in the context of globalisation) Security, as a concept, is a contested notion as there is disagreement between academics around whether the main issues should focus on national, international or individual security. This is mainly due to the shift of social and political interactions bought on by globalisation. Although this is the case, there is relative consensus that security is the freedom from threat to core values of both individuals and groups. The security dilemma is the concept that in an anarchic and uncertain world, any action to increase a state"s own security will be interpreted by other states, regardless of intention, as a direct attack on their security. Liberal theorists, hold the belief that peace is not a natural state, however it can be strengthened through the implementation of international institutions.
