Interpersonal Relationships
Reinforcement Affect /model
There is a linear relationship between attitude similarity and attraction.
Balance Theory
There is either balance or imbalance in the triad or relationships between an individual, another
person and an attitude object.
Similarity Beyond Attraction
Perceptions of high relational quality (love) appears to foster perceptions of greater self-partner
similarity. Expectations that partners should be similar for that relationship to be good > projection
of oe’s o attriutes oto the parter. Pereptio of siilarity i tur foster psyhologial
benefits of positive affect and self- esteem.
Love
Love is a combination of emotions, cognition and behaviours that can be involved in intimate
relationships.
Passionate or romantic love- Intensely emotional state and confusion of feelings: pain, anxiety and
relief etc.
Compassionate love- Combines feelings of affections and attachment, characterised by
understanding and concern for others welfare.
Triangular Theory of Love
Sternberg (1986) proposed a triangular model of love consisting of passion, intimacy and
commitment.
Intimacy
Perception that one is understood, validated and cared for by a relationship partner.
