Where schools fail linguistically diverse populations, migrant disadvantage can easily become entrenched in the next generation and lock out some groups in the long term, as has been the case with indigenous populations. Schools have a hidden curriculum of social reproduction to maintain and perpetuate the socio- economic order. The nationalist agenda of schooling included the suppression of linguistic diversity and the inculcation of the standard variety of the dominant language as the only legitimate form of linguistic expression. Multilingual habitus of education; eradicating subordinate indigenous languages. Submersion education: a situation where students are made to study exclusively through the medium of a language that they have not yet fully mastered. They usually do so in the presence of peers who are native speakers of the language of instruction and in the absence of any structured language learning support. Submersion education is a sink or swim approach.
