Criminal activities and unfair play in sport are so common that deviance in sports are out of control. People must admit that sports are not pure and good or that sport is being ruined by money and greed etc. A norm is how society thinks people should act. Deviance is when people"s behaviours act outside the social norm. Norms can be formal (official laws or rules) or informal (expected behaviours within a culture). Deviance is difficult to study because no single theory can explain deviance. " actions accepted in sports may be defined as deviance in other spheres of society, and actions accepted in society may be defined as deviance in sports. " Fights in hockey are normal in sport but is criminal in society. Taking "sick days" is accepted in society but it is deviant in sport. Deviance in sport is usually from an overconformity to rules rather than underconformity.
