Reading 4 - manifesto of the society for the protection of ancient buildings - william morris. 19th century = no new art and relies on restoration. We think that the last 50 years have done more for their destruction than all the foregoing centuries of revolution, violence, and contempt. 19th century had no true style of its own, it relied upon the restoration of the old. Restoring a building is stripping it of those things that are part of its history. Forgery used to be impossible when repairing buildings. The appearance of antiquity is taken away from the building"s fabric. There is no laying to rest in the spectator the suspicion of what may have been lost; and in short, a feeble and lifeless forgery is the final result of all the wasted labour . Salvaging of the past causes the loss of value or importance, and sometimes life.
