Organizational Culture : Set of values, norms, guiding beliefs and understandings shared by
members of the organization
Surface Level Culture : visible artifacts and observable behaviours (traditions)
Underlying Level : values, assumptions, beliefs, attitudes and feelings
Adaptability Culture : concerned with external focus and flexibility. Encourage values, norms that
support capacity of organization to detect, interpret and translate signals from environment into
new behaviour responses. Creativity and innovation is valued.
Mission Culture : concerned with external focus and stability. Emphasis on clear vision of
organization's purpose and achievement of goals to help achieve the purpose.
Clan Culture : concerned with internal focus and flexibility. Focuses on the need of employees as
the route to high performance. Common in fashion and retail industries.
Bureaucratic Culture : concerned with internal focus and stability. Methodical approach to
business. High level of consistency, conformity and collaboration among members.
Discipline Culture : Level 5 leadership, right values, right ppl in the right jobs, knowing where to go
Level 5 leadership : leader with a lack of ego, strong will and ambition for success of the
organization
Right values : individual freedom and autonomy for employees. Employees can be creative and
take more responsibility.
Right people in the right jobs : select and hire people who embody values that fit the culture of the
organization.
Knowing where to go : Great organizations have a deep understanding of what they are best at,
passionate about and good economic sense.
Managing Culture : promote learning and adaptation to the external environment. The culture
needs to promote ethical values and business practices.
Ethics : code of moral principles and values that govern judgement of right or wrong behaviour
