The network interface card (nic): is used to connect the computer to the network cable in a wired network and can also be a radio transmitter. Layer 1 & 2 unshielded twisted-pair (utp) cable: used mostly by lans, low cost(100 meters) shielded twisted-pair (stp): cable used in special areas that produce electrical interference(100 meters) Fiber-optic cable: thinner than utp, high capacity used in bns(400 meters +) Network hub/switch: link cables from different devices & act as a repeater. Port: connection where a cable is plugged in. Wireless access point: use radio waves to connect wireless clients to the wired network. Power over ethernet(poe) ap: don"t need external power but expensive (bigger organizations) Omnidirectional antenna: transmits in all directions at the same time. Directional antenna: transmits in one direction but is stronger and goes further. Nos server: provides functions for data link, network and application (print server) Nos client: provides functions for data link and network (active directory service)
