Our environment is the sum total of biotic and abiotic components with which we interact. Environmental science is the study of how the natural world works, how our environment affects us, and how we affect it. Natural resources are the various substances and energy sources we need to survive. Resource management aims to balance the use of these resources with their protection and preservation- balancing the rate of withdrawal with the rate of renewal. Stock refers to the harvestable portion of a resource. There have been 4 major periods of societal change that triggered huge increases in population size: 2nd during the shift from hunter-gatherer to agricultural lifestyle. 3rd industrial revolution (mid 1700"s)-also began trend of human-caused pollution. Each transition increased the carrying capacity of the environment for humans.
