Release from prison before the expiry of the sentence subject to requirements set by the relaxing authority. Release restrictions placed on someone serving life/indeterminate sentence apply until an individual dies. Nature of programs differ between individual and vary over time. Early release con icts with the just punishment imposed by the court. Conditional release greatly restricts a persons liberty. Laws of sentencing coexist with laws of conditional release (one doesn"t trump the other) Sentence is exact prescription for how it will be served. Purpose of corrections is set out in the corrections and conditional release act (ccra 1992): Ensure sentence is carried out and to help prepare prisoners for they release back into community. Only the courts can determine punishment and set maximum term of loss of freedom. Since 19th century management of prisoners has depended primarily on the use of force to maintain control. Initially relied on measures such as silent system , hard labour, oggings, isolation etc.
