SOCI 3005 Chapter Notes - Chapter 18: Ultimate Power, Bourgeoisie, Supermodel
Document Summary
Discipline and punish: the birth of the prison (new york: pantheon, 1978). The book opens up with a very vivid description of how convicts used to be tormented and punished for their crimes. I wasn"t very surprised by the fact since the crime was previously punished according to religious teachings (in some countries it still happens). However, while there are many things to analyze with the context of that description, the author wants us to focus mainly on the fact the gradual disappearance of torture from the public sphere. Before discussing more elements of this chapter, i just want to focus a bit on the disappearance part. Coming from a country where crime is relatively higher than canada, and also being engulfed in war with terrorism for many years, i have seen the public"s perception on punishment is somewhat divided.
