Enlightenment thinking: attempt to develop morality based on human reason versus religion. The view that being european meant being enlightened allowed for justification of colonial exploitations and relations. Human separated from natural world (nature seen as serving humans) Humans thought of an individual and not a collective. Caused mass increase in scientific inquiry and research. Rather than scrapping the whole process, make the concept more dynamic, cross cultural, inclusive and modern. (post-enlightenment) Human rights: seeks to overcome divisiveness and sectarianism, to unite people in asserting human rights in the face of globalization. If not careful hrs can serve consumerism and self-indulgence. Hr are not existing and waiting to be uncovered but rather are socially constructed through constant communication about shared ideas of being humane. Hr are not static but ever changing due to region, politics, time, culture, etc.
