BIOL 225 Chapter Notes - Chapter 40: Valine, Gastric Acid, Pancreatic Juice
Document Summary
Chapter 40 basic principles of animal form and function. As body dimensions increase, thicker skeletons are required to maintain adequate support. This also affects the muscle size required for locomotion. Rates of exchange for nutrients, waste products and gases are proportional to membrane surface area, amount of material that bust be exchanged to sustain life is proportional to cell volume. Organization of body plan: cell tissue ogan organ systems. 4 types of tissue: epithelial, connective, muscle, nervous. Regulator: animal that uses internal mechanisms to control internal change in the face of external fluctuation (otter) Conformer: animal that allows its internal condition to change in accordance with external changes in the variable (large mouth bass) Acclimatization: the gradual process by which an animal adjusts to changes in its external environment. Thermoregulation: process by which animals maintain an internal temperature within a tolerable range. Endothermic: internal sources provide most of the heat for temp regulation.
