Reading guide for narcissistic self-enhancement by morf and colleagues. Narc=defense vs a vulnerable, inadequate self, resulting from unfulfilled childhood needs. Freud: person overinvested in the self and trying to keep anything away that would threaten his/her ego, even at the expense of others. *kernberg and kohut = most influential on clinical perspective on narc. Kernberg: differentiation btwn relatively well-functioning narc (have confirmation of grandiosity) vs malignant type where paranoia, aggression, antisocial beh are dominant features. Kohut described how inds maintain grandiosity by repressing their unacceptable needs from consciousness thru fixation on an archaic primitive self. These descriptions led to classification in the dsm-3. Based on dsm criteria, npi is not measure of pathology. *clinical exp not qualitatively diff but solely that self-reg mech implemented w less success so more impairment. Measures along continuum narc pers attributes - widespread & normal dis in pop. Npi more emphasis on grandiosity rather than vulnerability. The dynamic self regulatory processing model of narcissism.
