Colonialism: the policy or practice of acquiring full or partial control over another country, occupying it with settlers, and exploiting it economically or culturally. Cultural mosaic (or melting pot: a metaphor for any society in which individual ethnic groups are able to maintain distinctive identities. Epiphenomenal: representing a factor of secondary significance as a more significant one (ie. race as being epiphenomenal to economic structure) Essentialism (or primordialism: the view that every ethnic group is made up of a set of readily identifiable traits that have been passed down from the past to the present with little or no change.
